How it works

  1. 1You see a state with four cities to choose from.
  2. 2One of the wrong answers is often the state's biggest city, so think twice.
  3. 3After ten states, see your score and play again until you know all 50.

About this quiz

Many US state capitals are smaller, quieter cities than the state's famous one: Albany, not New York City; Sacramento, not Los Angeles; Springfield, not Chicago; Tallahassee, not Miami.

That's exactly what this quiz tests. Each question usually includes the state's largest city as a trap, and after each answer you get a short note on it.

Frequently asked questions

+Does it cover all 50 states?

Yes. Each round picks ten of the 50 states at random, so a few rounds cover them all.

+Which state capitals are hardest?

The ones that aren't the biggest city: New York (Albany), California (Sacramento), Illinois (Springfield), Florida (Tallahassee) and Pennsylvania (Harrisburg) catch out the most people.
