How it works

  1. 1Name the teams (two to four), choose the time per turn, the difficulty and the word categories.
  2. 2Pass the phone to the first actor and start the clock. They act out the word on screen; their team shouts guesses.
  3. 3Tap “Got it” for every word guessed, “Skip” for a hard one. When time's up, check the list, then pass to the next team. Highest score wins.

About this game

Charades is the party game that needs nothing: no board, no cards, no setup. One person acts, everyone else guesses, and within a minute the whole room is involved. It works for a family Christmas, a kids' birthday, a team away day or a classroom on the last day of term.

The hard part was always thinking of words and keeping score. Here the words come from seven categories (actions, animals, jobs, sports, everyday things, films and stories, and Christmas), each marked easy, medium or hard, and the game times every turn and adds up the points for you.

Tips

  • Agree the classic signs first: fingers for the number of words, tugging your ear for “sounds like”.
  • Easy words for kids under eight, mixed for families, hard for competitive adults.
  • With a big group, add a third or fourth team so nobody waits too long.
  • If a team disputes a word, tap it on the review screen to change it before the score is added.

Ways to play

One word, everyone
Instead of teams, the actor's word is open to everyone; whoever guesses first acts next.
Speed round
Set 30 seconds per turn and see how many words a team can get.
Drawing instead of acting
Play the same words Pictionary-style on paper or a whiteboard.

Frequently asked questions

+How do you play charades?

Players split into teams. One person acts out a word or phrase without speaking while their team guesses. Each correct guess is a point; teams take turns until the rounds are done.

+What are good charades ideas for kids?

Choose easy words and the Animals, Actions and Everyday things categories: things like “Brushing your teeth”, “Penguin” or “Blowing up a balloon”.

+Can we play charades on a video call?

Yes. The actor uses the game on their phone while on camera; their team guesses out loud.

+How many players do you need?

Four or more is best, in two teams. With three people, play “One word, everyone” instead.
